6 Reasons to Pursue a New Career

Nov 14, 2019

Are you struggling with your current job or career?  Do you have a sense that you are just not in the right place?  Do you look around at others who find fulfillment in their jobs and want what they have?

If you can relate to these questions, then you might be a prime candidate for a career change.  Currently, it’s easy to get a job with such low unemployment so check out these six reasons for initiating a career change!

Reason #1 - Not Much Opportunity to Make Progress in Meaningful Work

In their book The Progress Principle, Teresa Amabile from Harvard Business School and researcher Steven Kramer explain that research has made it clear that progress in meaningful work has the most positive influence on how someone views their job.  We all see how this is true.  We want meaning in our work.  We want to be a part of something bigger than ourselves.  We also want to see clear progress and the possibility for more.  We want to look back and see where we were and compare it to where we are now.  Are you experiencing this?

Reason #2 - Opportunities Passing Me By

I really wish that we would all just stay in our lanes and not compare ourselves to others.  However, let’s get real… that is not happening any time soon.  It is so easy for us to believe that others are thriving and progressing, while we are standing still.  Sometimes though, it really is the case.  Those around us can be growing and progressing in their jobs and careers while we keep sputtering along.  Is your boss giving others new projects instead of you? Is this your situation?

Reason #3 - No Career Developmental Plan

My late father used to tell me repeatedly… “If you don’t plan, you plan to fail.”  I always used to get annoyed by that saying, but as I have grown, I have come to respect it more and more.  My Dad was right!  You cannot win or get better without a plan.  Do you currently have a plan that is going to help you win and advance in your career?  How are you developing your skills and your knowledge?  Are you charting a course or are you floundering?  If your boss hasn’t co-designed a career developmental plan with you, either he/she is not concerned about your future and promotability or he is not a very good boss. Either way, it is not a good sign for your future.

Reason #4 - Nobody Mentoring Me at Work

I believe that I could make a strong argument that whenever we get to a place where we stop being poured into, we will stop growing.  None of us has arrived, and we need a mentor interested in our development to show us the ropes, challenge us, hold us accountable, and provide knowledge and experience that we don’t have.  Who is pouring into you and mentoring you?  Who is championing your cause with the higher-ups?  Is any of this happening?  You cannot grow without it.

Reason #5 - Bored at Work

I must be honest… I am not much of a social media guy, but I love catching up on sports scores and news.  The latest trade buzz or playoff prediction can wrap me in so quickly.  However, if this is what I find myself doing consistently at work, then there is something very wrong.  God created us to work and to work hard for His glory.  Do you find yourself being idle quite often at work?  Is your smartphone more of a source of fulfillment than your job?  Do you wake up dreading going to work?  Are you over-qualified for your job with no growth route?  Are you surrounded by unambitious, “blame everything on the boss” colleagues?

Reason #6 - No Impact On the Company, Customers and Colleagues

Have you ever asked yourself the questions… If I quit today, would anyone notice?  Would I be missed?  Would it impact the company? Would our customers care?

If you find yourself answering “no” to these questions, then it is probably time to pursue something different.  Each of us has been given unique skills and talents to be leveraged for the glory of God.  Is that happening currently?  Are you making an impact?
